Family Education Rights And Privacy Act (FERPA) Parent Guide

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. FERPA gives parents certain rights, which transfer to students once they turn 18 or attend a school beyond the high school level (these are called “eligible students”).

 Who Has Rights?

  • Parents until the student turns 18.
  • After 18 or college enrollment, rights transfer to the student.

Your Rights Under FERPA

  • Review and access education records.
  • Request corrections to inaccurate records.
  • Control who sees your records.
